Family Transition Night

Transitional services in special education are designed to help students with disabilities transition from school to post-school life. Even though transition services begin no later than age 13, planning starts as early as elementary school for additional support. The focus of this transition is on the student’s post-school goals, including continuing education, independent living, and employment.  The student and the family are integral to this process. Harrisonburg City Schools and Rockingham County Public Schools will be assisting families navigating Transitional Services by hosting HCPS/RCPS Transition Night, a resource fair open to all families of children and young adults with special needs in the Harrisonburg-Rockingham area on Thursday, February 1, 2024 from 6:30pm-8:30pm at James Madison University’s Festival Ballroom.

This event will bring as many community resources to one location to help our families make those important connections to broaden their opportunities for independence now and in the future.  Some of the many agencies represented will be; the Community Services Board (CSB), the Department for Aging & Rehabilitative Services (DARS), the Valley Association for Independent Living (VAIL), Disability Services from local colleges and universities, Speech Language Center, Local Fire Departments, Camps like Still Meadows, Young Life Capernum, and many others.  Parents can expect to gain valuable information from the agencies as they walk around in a fair style set up. There will be set times for families to talk with CSB, DARS, and VAIL in a small group setting.
