Dear Rockingham County Public Schools Families and Staff, As you may be aware, Harrisonburg City Public Schools has closed both their high schools for the day based on a specific threat to those schools. As a result of these closings, we have had multiple calls regarding the status of schools in Rockingham County. The threat in question was specific to Harrisonburg City and did not involve any schools in RCPS. We have received no credible threats toward any of our schools and our schools are operating on their regular schedule. It is difficult to contain the rumor mill at this age group, however, I would ask for your support in reminding your students that our administrators and faculty are here to ensure they have a safe and positive learning environment. We would also like to ask for you to use this as an opportunity to remind your student that using threatening language or behavior of any kind, whether in person, via social media, text, or any other means, is a serious offense and carries heavy consequences. Threats are never a joke, they aren’t funny, and they won’t be treated lightly. The safety and well-being of our school community is our number one priority. I also want to take a moment to recognize the support of Rockingham County’s Sheriff’s Department, School Resource Officers, and parents for their role in keeping our students safe. This week, we celebrate the incredible power of the arts in our schools by recognizing Arts in Education Week! The arts ignite creativity, inspire critical thinking, and bring our communities together. 🎨🎻🎬 We would like to invite all community members to celebrate the creativity of our students during a community open house Fine Arts Expo on Tuesday, September 17 from 4:30-7:00 p.m. This annual exhibition is a showcase of the talents of our Rockingham students, as well as an opportunity for you to meet and greet our county art teachers who will be present throughout the night. We will have a digital scavenger hunt and light refreshments available for the artists, their families, and community members.

The Virginia Department of Education is hosting a virtual Commonwealth Conversation this Monday, August 5, 2024, at 10:30 a.m. to give parents, educators, and community members throughout Virginia the opportunity to share their thoughts on the best ways to achieve cell phone-free education and address the increasing evidence of the impact cell phone and social media usage has on education and youth mental health. Parents, educators, and interested citizens throughout the Commonwealth are invited to attend and discuss their expectations for the upcoming policy changes that will take effect in January 2025.
